Weekend Box Office: November 9-11, 2018

We predicted last week that the new animated version of 'The Grinch' would be the new #1 at the Box Office this past weekend & that's exactly what happened. We know our stuff! 'The Grinch' hauled in a $67.5M opening weekend, a respectable amount & close to it's $75M budget. In 2nd place was last week's winner the bio-pic of Queen front man Freddie Mercury, 'Bohemian Rhapsody' with $31M bringing its new domestic total to over $100M. In 3rd place was the new horror/military thriller 'Overlord' produced by J.J. Abrams with an opening weekend of $10.2M. Rounding out the top spots, dropping from 2nd place last weekend to 4th was the Disney fantasy film 'The Nutcracker and the Four Realms' with $10M & 'A Star Is Born' is staying strong in 5th place with just over $8M bringing it's 6 week domestic total to an impressive $178M!

It's worth noting that the opening weekend for the newest addition to the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo story 'The Girl in the Spider's Web' had a
mediocre $7.8M opening in 6th place. This was despite being in almost 3,000 theatres and a massive marketing campaign. Honestly, it's been too long since the last film, with an entirely new lead cast and director, so not a overly huge surprise that it do not perform well.

Opening this weekend in theatres is the sequel to the Harry Potter prequels (try saying that 5 times fast) 'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald'. The new comedy with lots of heart 'Instant Family' starring Mark WahlbergRose Byrne opens this Weekend as well as the crime thriller 'Widows' starring Viola Davis.

I think we can safely predict 'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald' will be the #1 movie at the Box Office this Weekend! Such a huge following, it is opening wide in 4,163 theatres & the 1st film made an insane $814M worldwide.
