With no true competition opening in theatres, it was a pretty easy prediction to make that 'Star Wars: Rise Of Skywalker' was going to 3-Peat as your Box Office champion for the first weekend of 2020! The blockbuster conclusion to the Skywalker Saga earned another $34.5M to stay in 1st place. It has now earned $918M worldwide in just 18 days and we suspect it will pass the $1B mark after this coming weekend.
'Jumanji: The Next Level' remained in 2nd place with $26.2M, 'Little Women' moved up one spot to 3rd place this past weekend with $13.6M and dropping to 4th place with $11.8M was 'Frozen II'. It's with noting 'Frozen II' has now earned $1.3B worldwide and surpassed the previous 'Frozen' film total of $1.2B back in 2013. Rounding out the top spots in 5th place, opening with $11.4M, was the latest remake of the horror classic 'The Grudge'.
There are a few movies opening in wide release this coming weekend. The comedy 'Like a Boss' starring Rose Byrne & Tiffany Haddish, as well as a new Horror 'Underwater' starring Kristen Stewart. Last but not least is the war drama '1917' from director Sam Mendes. This film just won the Golden Globe for best drama, perfect timing for their wide release! This is actually a tough prediction to make. It's entirely plausible that 'Star Wars: Rise Of Skywalker' could repeat for a 4th weekend in a row, but with this last weekend's total and it would likely decrease by at least 30-50% so one of these new films could sneak its way into the top spot!
So our official prediction, coming off the heat of a Golden Globe win is that '1917' will be the new #1 movie at the Box Office after this coming weekend, but we wouldn't be shocked if 'Star Wars: Rise Of Skywalker' had one more week at the top!
