We predicted last week the new #1 movie would be the 3rd instalment in the Gerard Butler "Fallen" films 'Angel Has Fallen' & we were of course right on the money! Although it was a relatively quiet weekend in theatres, Gerry managed to gunfight his way to the top spot with an opening weekend of $21.3M for 'Angel Has Fallen'. In 2nd place this past weekend with $11.6M was last week's #1 movie 'Good Boys' from the creative team behind the classic 'Superbad'. This new R-Rated Comedy is off to a great start and now has a 2 week domestic total of $41.9M on a budget of only $20M! In 3rd place with $8.1M was a new film 'Overcomer' about a high-school basketball coach who volunteers to help a troubled teen in long-distance running. Strong opening for the faith based film from the leading Actor/Writer/Director in this genre, Alex Kendrick. In 4th place was 'Hobbs & Shaw' with $8M, the film also opened strong in China this past weekend and its worldwide total in just 4 weeks is now $589M! Rounding out the top spots in 5th place also with $8M was Disney's live action 'The Lion King'. Still earning well in theatres after 6 weeks, 'The Lion King' now has over $510M in domestic sales as well as worldwide total of over $1.5B!
There is not a lot opening in theatres this coming weekend! There are 2 small releases, 'Bennett's War' in 970 theatres, and a new Horror 'Don't Let Go' in about 900 theatres. That being said, neither of those limited releases has a shot to take the top spot, so we're thinking this coming weekend will look a lot like this past weekend! It is possible 'Good Boys' might move back into 1st but most likely it will again be a super quiet weekend in theatres and at the end of it our official prediction is that 'Angel Has Fallen' will repeat as the #1 movie. All of this will change of course the following weekend when 'IT: Chapter Two' opens in theatres Sept 6th!
