With an opening weekend of $31.4M 'Ford v Ferrari' raced past the competition to steal first place at the Box Office! It's the true story of Ford's attempt to build a race car to challenge Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966, starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon. The World War II drama 'Midway' dropped to 2nd place this past weekend with $8.5M narrowly beating our prediction to take the top spot last week, the 'Charlie's Angels' reboot. We thought more people would want to see this one, but it came up short with a 3rd place $8.35M opening weekend. In 4th place with $8.33M was the family comedy 'Playing with Fire' and rounding out the top spots this past weekend in 5th place with $6.4M was 'Last Christmas'.
It's not in the top 5 anymore, but it's worth noting in this report that this past weekend's box office total pushed 'Joker' over $1B worldwide! The first R-rated movie to ever reach that milestone.
There are a few movies opening in wide release this coming weekend including '21 Bridges' starring Chadwick Boseman, known best as the title character from Marvel's 'Black Panther'. This one is about an NYPD detective thrust into a citywide manhunt for a pair of cop killers after uncovering a massive and unexpected conspiracy. Also opening this weekend is the biography drama 'A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood' and a guaranteed Oscar nomination for Tom Hanks as he plays Mr. Fred Rogers. But all that being said, it's an easy prediction of what film we be #1 at the Box Office after this weekend as 'Frozen II' opens in theatres. Not even going to be close lol, 'Frozen II' will have a monstrous opening weekend, somewhere in the $100M range we guess! We'll see come Monday.
