If your read last week's Box Office Report our prediction was a really tough call to make! Our gut was saying the latest thriller from writer/director Jordan Peele, 'Us' was going to do really well but ultimately went with 'Captain Marvel' repeating at #1 for a 3rd time in a row. We should have gone with our gut! 'Us' had a dominating opening weekend with $71M! Not only out-performing the opening weekends for several recent horror hits, but delivering the 2nd largest opening ever for a live-action, original film. Extremely impressive on a budget of only $20M, it's also the 3rd largest opening of all-time for an R-rated horror film!
Dropping to 2nd place was 'Captain Marvel' with $34.2M this past weekend and as of today's post has earned $323M domestic & $914M worldwide in 3 weeks! Rounding out the other top spots at the Box Office was 'Wonder Park' with $8.7M in 3rd, 'Five Feet Apart' with $8.5M in 4th & 'How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World' in 5th place with $6.5M!
There are 2 movies opening in wide release this coming Weekend, 'Beach Bum' starring Matthew McConaughey as a rebellious stoner named Moondog that lives life by his own rules & Tim Burton's new live action version of the classic story 'Dumbo'. It's another tough call! With the incredibly impressive opening weekend for 'Us' it's hard not to see them repeating at #1, however 'Dumbo' is going to be in 4,200 theatres with a massive marketing push and nostalgia interest behind it. Again, really tough decision, but officially we are going to predict that it will be super-close but 'Dumbo' will most likely edge out as the #1 movie at the box office this coming weekend!
