We predicted last week that 'The Lion King' would repeat as the #1 movie at the Box Office, and of course we were right! Disney's newest Live-Action remake of 'The Lion King' repeated as "King of the Box Office" with $76.6M domestically! At the time of this post 'The Lion King' has earned an insane $990M worldwide in only 10 days! It will easily cross the $1B box office mark after this coming weekend. In fact, the Top 5 grossing films of 2019 so far are all linked to Disney owned properties, they are on their way to a record breaking year!
We also predicted last week the new Quentin Tarantino film 'Once Upon a Time In Hollywood' would come in 2nd place with an opening weekend of about $55M, we came up short on that one as it did open in 2nd place but with a total of $41M. Still a really good start for this movie on a budget of $90M, looking forward to seeing this one! In 3rd place this past weekend with $12.4M was 'Spider-Man: Far from Home' which also crossed $1B worldwide at the Box Office surpassing the total of $880M from the previous Spider-Man movie in 2017 'Homecoming'. In 4th place was 'Toy Story 4' going strong after 6 weeks in theatres with $10.4M and rounding out the top spots in 5th was the new Alligator Action Adventure 'Crawl' with $4M.
There's only one new movie opening in wide release this coming weekend, 'Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw' starring box office champ Dwayne Johnson & the always bad-ass Jason Statham. This looks like an insanely cool, action packed thrill ride and although 'The Lion King' has been dominant these last 2 weeks our official prediction is that 'Hobbs & Shaw' will be the new #1 movie at the Box Office after this Weekend!
