Weekend Box Office: Jan 4 - Jan 6, 2019

The King of the Seas  is also the King of the Box Office! As we predicted last week, 'Aquaman' repeated as the #1 movie at the box office for a 3rd weekend in a row with $31M. It has now earned $963M globally and is the highest grossing movie ever worldwide for films in the EDCU (Extended DC Universe). In 2nd place was the only new film to premiere this past weekend, 'Escape Room' with $18.2M. Horror always does well! It costs nothing to make, budget was only $9M and was only released in 2,500 theatres so the 2nd place opening weekend is impressive. 3rd place was last week's #2 film 'Mary Poppins Returns' with $15.8M. Bringing it's 3 week domestic total to $138M and now over the film's budget of $130M. In 4th place with $13.2M was the Transformer's prequel 'Bumblebee'. As far as Transformer movies go, these are really low numbers. At the time of this post, the film finally inched it's way over the $100M mark domestically and $300M globally, compared to the lowest grossing Transformers movie: 'The Last Knight(2017) which still made over $600M worldwide. Finally, in 5th place was 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' with $13.1M & winning the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film over the weekend as well!

There are 3 new movies in wide release this coming weekend! 'The Upside' starring Bryan Cranston & Kevin Hart. It's a dramedy about the relationship between a wealthy man with quadriplegia and an unemployed man with a criminal record who's hired to help him. 'A Dog's Way Home' is the "true story" (always take that term loosely lol) about a dog that travels 400 miles in search of her owner. Also opening this weekend is the Sci-Fi Thriller 'Replicas' starring Keanu Reeves about a scientist becomes obsessed with bringing back his family members who died in a traffic accident.

This is a tough one, 'A Dog's Way Home' is opening in over 3,000 theatres and it's the type of family film that everyone can go see. We just can't for some reason see it over taking the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. 'Aquaman' was $12M over it's closest competition this past weekend and does not look like it is slowing down. Therefore we predict for a 4th week in a row 'Aquaman' will be the #1 movie at the box office after this coming weekend and cross over the $1B total worldwide. We may get surprised but it would be a first, we haven't been wrong once yet with our predictions. It's worth noting we also predict this will be the last weekend 'Aquaman' is #1 because the following weekend the anticipated M. Night Shyamalan universe crossover film 'Glass' will be opening, but more on that next week.
