Happy New Year! As we predicted, with no new movie releases 'Aquaman' repeated as the #1 movie at the box office this past weekend with $52.1M! In fact, all the top 5 spots repeated in the exact same order as the weekend before, with new totals. In 2nd place with $28.3M was 'Mary Poppins Returns' which was higher than their opening weekend total of $23.5M. In 3rd place with $20.9M was the the Transformer's prequel 'Bumblebee' with John Cena & Hailee Steinfeld. 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' repeated at #4 this week with $18.7M bringing it's 3 week domestic total to $104M, now above the budget cost of $90M! Rounding out the top spots in 5th was Clint Eastwood's drama 'The Mule' with $12.1M now with a 3 week domestic total of $61M.
There is only 1 new movie in wide release this coming weekend, 'Escape Room'. Six strangers find themselves in circumstances beyond their control, and must use their wits to survive. To be honest this just sounds like a new version of the 'Saw' movies lol. Horror tends to do well, don't get us wrong, however in only 2,500 theatres we just can't see it dethroning the King of the Seas. Therefore our official box office prediction for this coming weekend will be 'Aquaman' repeating as the #1 movie again for a 3rd week in a row.
