Weekend Box Office: Dec 21 - Dec 23, 2018

As we predicted,  and we haven't been wrong yet, 'Aquaman' was the #1 movie at the box office this past weekend with $67.4M! The DC action adventure starring Jason Momoa was one of the lowest grossing opening weekends for a DC film, but it was good enough to take the box office crown last week. In 2nd place with $23.5M was another new film, 'Mary Poppins Returns' the continuation of the Disney Classic story from 1964 starring Julie Andrews. In 3rd place with $21.6M was the the Transformer's prequel 'Bumblebee' with John CenaHailee Steinfeld. A very low opening weekend for the new film considering the $135M budget. 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse', last weeks #1 movie fell to #4 this week with all of the new films being released with $16.6M bringing it's 2 week domestic total to $64.7M. Rounding out the top spots in 5th was Clint Eastwood's latest crime drama 'The Mule' with $9.5M.

There are no new movies opening this weekend, however, there were 2 on Christmas Day in limited release. 'Holmes & Watson', the 3rd collaboration co-starring Will Ferrell & John C. Reilly is bring panned by critics, but as huge fans of this comedy-duo although it won't make money at the box office, we can only imagine the shenanigans they will get into as there titles characters in this one. The other film that opened on Christmas Day was 'Vice', the story of Dick Cheney, an unassuming bureaucratic Washington insider, who quietly wielded immense power as Vice President to George W. Bush. This looks really good, from writer/director Adam McKay who scored big last year with another Dramedy 'The Big Short' about the US Mortgage crisis. A lot of the same cast from that film are back to star in 'Vice' including Steve Carell & Christian Bale as Dick Cheney.

With no new films being released this coming weekend and considering how wide the gap was between 1st & 2nd place films, it's a pretty safe prediction that 'Aquaman' will be the #1 movie at the box office again after this weekend.
