Weekend Box Office: April 5 - April 7, 2019
We predicted last week 'Shazam!' would be the new #1 movie at the Box Office & that is exactly what happened. The DC movie starring Zachary Levi had a solid $53.4M opening weekend, knocking last week's champ 'Dumbo' down to 3rd place. Coming in 2nd place with $25M was another new movie, 'Pet Sematary' an updated version of the Stephen King classic & 1989 film of the same. As we mentioned, Tim Burton's new live action version of the classic story 'Dumbo' dropped to 3rd place with $18.2M & at the time of this post has now earned $215M worldwide. In 4th place was Jordan Peele's 'Us' with $13.7M & with a budget of only $20M it has now grossed $152M domestic! Rounding out the top spots in 5th was 'Captain Marvel' with $12.4M & has now officially crossed the $1B threshold worldwide!
There are a few movies opening this coming weekend. The 2 worth mentioning are the new reboot of 'Hellboy' 2019 starring David Harbour from Netflix's 'Stranger Things' as the title character & a new animated feature 'Missing Link' with voices by Hugh Jackman & Zach Galifianakis. We've debated from the trailer whether the new 'Hellboy' is good enough, people seem to really be looking forward to it, the question is will it be good enough to be the #1 movie at the Box Office? Really tough call, considering how well 'Shazam!' performed. Ugh, we think it will be close, but there might be too much curiosity about the new 'Hellboy' and how it differs from the Ron Perlman character in the Guillermo del Toro version from 2004 & sequel for it not to be #1, at least for just the opening weekend anyway. 'Shazam!' could repeat if we are wrong, but our official prediction is that 'Hellboy' 2019 will be the #1 movie at the Box Office this coming weekend!
