Weekend Box Office: April 12 - April 14, 2019

So when the 1st trailer for the new 'Hellboy' reboot came out we were not overly excited. Maybe because we were huge fans of the Ron Perlman character in the Guillermo del Toro version from 2004 & its sequel, or maybe because the footage and dialogue didn't WOW us. Regardless we set our expectations to low! That being said, last week when making our predictions for the upcoming weekend's Box Office and it was finally premiering with no other huge movie being released and 'Shazam' was going into weekend #2, we felt gave it a shot to come out on top. We did say if we were wrong 'Shazam' would repeat at #1 but maybe everyone didn't feel the same way about 'Hellboy' as we did lol? We were wrong about that! Everyone felt the same way and 'Hellboy' opened in 3rd! We will get to those results in a minute.

So the #1 movie at the Box Office this past weekend was 'Shazam!' with $24.4M and repeating at the top spot with a 2 week worldwide gross of $258M! In 2nd place was a new release, 'Little' earning $15.4M and edged out 'Hellboy' as well which surprised a few people. It's basically the opposite of the 1988 classic 'Big' with Tom Hanks. This updated version features Regina Hall as a woman transformed into her younger self at a point in her life when the pressures of adulthood become too much to bear. So 3rd place was 'Hellboy' with $12M, a disappointment for them, however, it was made on a budget of only $50M so there is a good chance that with overseas revenue it can squeeze out a profit. In 4th place this past weekend was 'Pet Sematary' with $9.7M dropping all the way from 2nd place the previous weekend. Rounding out the top spots in 5th place was 'Dumbo' with $9.4M and at the time of this post has now earned $268M worldwide!

There a few movies opening in wide release this Easter Long Weekend! 'Breakthrough' starring Chrissy Metz from TV's 'This Is Us' about a mother of a 14-year-old son that drowns in a lake & prays for him to come back from the brink of death. As well as a new horror film, 'The Curse of La Llorona' is opening in about 3,400 theatres. It's possible 'Shazam' repeats a 3rd weekend at #1 and it being Easter the movie about faith 'Breakthrough' has a shot but we don't think it's playing in enough theatres to have a realistic chance. So our official prediction is that 'The Curse of La Llorona' will be your #1 movie at the Box Office this coming Weekend. For one weekend anyway, all bets are off when 'Avengers: Endgame' premieres the following weekend! It's going to smash records and be your #1 movie for a while lol!
