Congratulations to Matt Trovato of London, Ontario for being the latest K-Dog & Fish Funko Funatic of the Week!
Here is Matt's Funko Story:
I remember like it was yesterday. The date was June 14, 2013. I strolled into my favorite comic book shop on my self appointed extended lunch break with a crisp $20 bill burning a hole in my pocket. I had recently started watching Game of Thrones and of course Daenerys was my favorite. She had dragons, and that’s all I needed to know. What I didn’t know was that several years into the future they would totally ruin her character and story and…… sorry, I’m still not over that last season. Anyways, I was on the prowl for some GoT merch when I stumbled upon the Daenerys Pop. I thought it looked pretty cute, plus it had the lil dragon sitting on her arm. Totes adorbs. Obviously I had to make the purchase.
That’s what started my foray into collecting Funko Pops. At first I didn’t plan on going crazy, maybe only get one if I saw any based on a series I liked. I was collecting Transformers at the time so I didn’t have much room for another obsession. Well well well, how the turntables. I quickly got more into Pops just because of how many of my favourite franchises were represented. I soon found out how it was easier to find Pops from my favorite movies or shows than it was to find any other related merch. Soon enough Pops were my new obsession. I’m currently almost at 700 Funko related paraphernalia and I think that it both impresses and scares my loved ones. One of these days I’ll get around to sorting them, I promise.
I have a little bit of everything in my collection. A lot of Marvel, mostly from the movies. My favourite Marvel character is Deadpool so I make it a point to get every new Deadpool Pop that comes out. Some Star Wars, especially Grogu/The Child/Baby Yoda. Some video game ones, some sports ones like Toronto Maple Leafs and the Blue Jays mascot. I also love The Office so naturally I have almost every one that was released. I think I’m only missing a Jim and a few Dwight's that weren’t released here in Canada.

I have a few keychains and shirts, a couple Deadpool plushies and Dorbz, and the Bob & Doug McKenzie Funko Vynl set. I almost forgot about the Pint Sized Minis and a couple of Soda Kats and Kawaii Village figures too! I have thought about getting into the Soda Cans but that might spark another branch of collection that I probably can’t get into because we are slowly running out of space in our apartment. The good news is if we ever get evicted I can probably make a pretty sweet fort out of all the boxes.
At the moment I’m not really searching for anything specifically. I just try to keep up when new ones are available so I can get them ASAP as possible, because I’d rather get them right away then go through the trouble of looking around online or getting lucky and randomly stumbling upon it at the store later on. I’m always on the lookout for any Deadpool or The Office ones I’m missing, or any that just have a cool design. I’m also looking for Pops that are exclusive to American retailers that we might not get here in Canada. I do have a couple of friends living in USA who I constantly remind to check stores for me. I’m starting to think they just tune me out at this point though. One of them hasn’t replied since 2018.
As for my favourites, well it’s too hard to choose. My whole collection is pretty much based on my favourite things that I’m already interested in so it’s almost like all of them are my favourite. If I HAD to choose I’d say the Daenerys that started it all. And maybe Ace Ventura that I found at the comic shop for $14 that I really wish I kept in the box! I’ll also mention the Jollibee Pops my in-laws sent all the way from the Philippines. They are just so unique and cool and I don’t think many people here have them, even though Jollibee is amazing!
I’m pretty sure my sister sent me the link for K-Dog & Fish when I was looking for online stores that just specialized in Funko stuff. Luckily you guys aren’t too far away and I don’t need to wait long for shipments! Now if only I wouldn’t miss deliveries and they wouldn’t make me go to the post office every time!
But I really enjoy the interaction and community feel that I get from you guys! The live streams, garage sales, podcasts, or just chatting in DMs isn’t something every store does so it makes the collecting experience that much better. Not just for me but for everyone that tunes in. It’s like we are just chatting with fellow Funko enthusiasts. I’ll definitely hang around as long as you guys keep going, and hopefully I’ll get to visit the store soon!
