Last week we predicted 'Birds Of Prey' would without a doubt be the new #1 movie at the Box Office and of course we were correct. However it did underperform with an opening weekend of only $33M, good enough for 1st place but well below expectations. So much in fact the studio renamed the film LOL! Seriously, the official total was 'Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn' or even simply referred to as 'Birds Of Prey'. Now they have officially renamed and marketing the film as 'Harley Quinn: Birds Of Prey'. We've never seen this before, renaming a film after opening weekend, in hopes to draw a bigger audience on the Harley Quinn name alone.
Dropping to 2nd place this past weekend with $12M was 'Bad Boys for Life', the box office champ for the last 3 weekends! In 3rd place was '1917' with $9.2M as well as losing out to 'Parasite' for Best Picture at the Academy Awards on Sunday. In 4th place with $6.5M was 'Dolittle' and rounding out the top spots in 5th place with $5.5M was 'Jumanji: The Next Level'.
There are a few new movies opening this weekend! Including 'Downhill' a dramedy from the award winning screenwriters of 'The Descendants' starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus & Will Ferrell. Also opening is 'Fantasy Island' starring Lucy Hale & Maggie Q. It's a new horror adaptation of the popular '70s TV show about a magical island resort. Last but not least opening this weekend is 'Sonic the Hedgehog'. A mix of Live Action and Animation, it's bringing the classic video game to life on the big screen with Ben Schwartz voicing Sonic and Jim Carrey as the villain Dr. Ivo Robotnik.
With the disappointing performance of 'Birds Of Prey', renaming it or not, it is completely vulnerable to losing out on the top spot in its second weekend in theatres. So our official prediction is that 'Sonic the Hedgehog' will speed past the competition and be your new #1 movie at the Box Office after this coming weekend.
